Wearing History E-R149- Early 1950s "Merry-Go-Round" Circle Skirt

E-PATTERN- Download and print at home or send A0's to be printed at a copy shop!  Did you know we also print A0's at Pattern Printing Company?

This pattern is based on a period original and has additions for clarity.  In the period the pattern only went to a 32" waist, but sizes 34"-46" waist have been added to this pattern.  Sizes 24"-46" waist are all in the same packet!

Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty.  Read more below!

Description:
A fun and twirly skirt from the very beginning of the 1950s. Circle skirts are
iconic, and made a very short appearance in the late 1930s, then again in the
very late 1940s through 1950s. And they’re perfect for modern wear!

Original Period Description:
“Swirling Merry-Go-Round Skirt: ‘Quick And Easy’ circular skirt for sun, patio,
and dance floor. Belt band hooks at side front, apron ties in back. Merry-go-round
skirt can be worn four ways: bow in back, at side, knot-tied in front, and
cummerband fashion.”

Please be aware this skirt is not designed to be adjustable, but can be slightly
adjusted with multiple rows of hooks and eyes (see notes inside). This skirt
does not have pockets. Allow time for the skirt to hang before hemming.

Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty
Suitable for an Adventurous Beginner or Intermediate Level. This pattern is suitable for a beginner because it doesn't involve any buttons or zippers!  You will sew hooks and eyes by hand for the closure.

Please allow at least two days between finishing the skirt and hemming it, in order to allow the bias of the fabric to drop.  This isn't a weekend project, even though the sewing is quite quick!  The hardest part of this skirt is marking the hem to be even all the way around, and sewing a narrow hem.  The hem circumference is quite large since it's a circle! It helps to have a sewing buddy to mark your hem for you, or a dress form so you can mark your hem yourself.

Sizes Included

Please see images for size chart.

Waist sizes 24"-46" are all included in the same packet.

Choose the pattern by WAIST MEASURE.  Hips are forgiving, based on the full cut of the skirt.

Take your waist measure over the smallest part of your waist, and over any blouse, sweater, etc you plan on wearing with the skirt.  If you're between sizes, size up.  Very little ease is included.

  • HOW TO USE E-PATTERNS

Most patterns come as both A4/US LETTER and A0 size. You will need ADOBE READER, a free program, to print your e-pattern.

    For A4/US LETTER paper:

Open the "READ-ME-FIRST" File for instructions on printing and piecing your pattern. Print the PDF file on your home printer, cut off on the lines given, and tape them together. Then you cut and use your pattern just as you would a normal home sewing pattern.

    For A0 size:

This is sent away to a copyshop and printed on big sheets for you. We print A0 pattern sheets at great prices at Pattern Printing Company
