Wearing History E-R160- Early 1950s Skirt with Scalloped Detail
A print-at-home pattern in waist sizes 24"-42", all in the same packet.
E-PATTERN- Download and print at home or send A0's to be printed at a copy shop!
NOTE this pattern is best printed in COLOR and my patterns do not have layered files.
This pattern is based on a period original and some text clarifications. In the period the pattern only went to a 32" waist, but sizes 34"-42" waist have been added to this pattern. Sizes 24"-42" waist are all in the same packet! The pattern did need some adjusting to work properly, but still retains the period aesthetic. Note that very little to no waist ease is provided, so size up if you desire more ease.
*****Upper Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty****
Should be familiar with basic garment construction and be open to trying vintage period techniques.
(Read More Below!)
Description:
A fun novelty skirt from the very beginning of the 1950s. The a-line skirt tapers to a nice, full hem. The bottom of the skirt is decorated with a scalloped border that is stitched on top of the base skirt. Buttons are added for a fun touch! This works well for solids or non-directional prints in a stable midweight cotton with some body, like quilting weights or broadcloths. Period fabric suggestions are given on the back cover (zoom in to read).
++ Please note++ No zipper insertion techniques were given with this pattern in the original, so you will need to use your preferred zip insertion method. A brief zipper method is added at the back of the packet, with an extra link to a video. A lapped zipper method will result in less waist ease, where a centered application will give the 0.6" of ease that was added to the pattern. If you desire more ease, size up and fit the skirt to your figure during a mock up.
This skirt is made in panels, with a gentle A-Line, which is *perfect* for over petticoats. In fact, I suggest a petticoat to support the scallops! See the image given with the comparison between with, and without petticoat underneath. No petticoat or blouse patterns are included with this pattern. This skirt *does NOT* have pockets.
Original Period Description:
“Flared Eight-Gore Skirt with Contrast Border. An all-occasion “Quick and Easy” skirt to team with sun or evening bouses. The eight gores swing out in graceful flares. Button-trimmed, scalloped border is effective in contrast. Skirt is suitable for many different fabrics."
Note- “Quick and Easy” vintage patterns can still be a challenge!
*****Sizes Included******
Please see images for size chart.
Waist sizes 24"-42" are all included in the same packet.
I recommend choosing the pattern size by waist measure (given in inches)
Take your waist measure over the smallest part of your waist, and over any blouse, sweater, etc you plan on wearing with the skirt. If you're between sizes, size up. Very little ease is included.

About Wearing History Resto-Vival™ Patterns
Resto-Vival™ Patterns are original historic patterns that have been restored and revived. Original patterns are usually available only in single sizes, precut from tissue paper and totally unprinted, with details like grainlines and darts indicated only by small perforations. Resto-Vival™ patterns are printed on sturdy bond paper instead of tissue and clearly marked with drawn and labeled markings. These markings aid the modern sewer in understanding the markings of the original pattern and the construction of the garment. Resto-Vival™ patterns follow the period shapes of the original patterns, maintaining the historical accuracy of the completed garment. Original period instructions are included. These instructions are text only (unless otherwise noted) and fairly minimal, especially compared to instructions for modern patterns. At least an intermediate knowledge of dressmaking and a good familiarity with pattern construction is suggested. You may choose to have a modern or period sewing book handy to help with basic construction methods that the pattern instructions do not cover in detail. Also, fitting a muslin mockup is strongly recommended, as all garments were meant to be worn over period foundation garments or corsetry.
